5 years on...
As we reach the fifth anniversary of the first school closures due to Coronavirus, Mr Tidd has scanned through the school log for the first indications of what was to come - and how little we knew!
The first mention doesn't even arrive until late February:
Monday 24th February 2020 |
School re-opens [after half-term] Due to the increasing spread of a new virus (Coronavirus), pupils will now be encouraged to wash their hands on arrival in school, and again before lunch. Mr Rogers has also ordered supplies of alcohol hand gel to ease queues at sinks. |
Wednesday 11th |
Locality staff meeting held at Georgian Gardens Primary. Due to increasing presence of coronavirus, year teams met separately in classrooms. All staff washed hands on arrival. |
Thursday 12th March 2020 |
Letters were sent to parents explaining current advice to school surrounding the Coronavirus. Plans made for potential closure. [The senior leadership team met and talked through possible changes needed: at that stage we foresaw the potential for a 2-week closure leading up to Easter, but it still seemed unlikely] |
Monday 16th March 2020 |
All families have bee written to with outline details for any potential closure caused by the spread of the coronavirus. Children have passwords for online resources. Current government guidance is that schools should remain open. A very small number of parents have chosen to withdraw their children due to the virus. |
Tuesday 17th March 2020 |
All forthcoming public events at school have been cancelled to help maintain “social distancing” and prevent potential spread of coronavirus. Cancelled events including parents evenings, sport fixtures, swimming lessons, class assemblies and Y5 visit to The Angmering School. |
Wednesday 18th March 2020 |
The Prime Minster, Boris Johnson, announced on TV that all schools would close from Friday for the foreseeable future due to the increasing spread of Coronavirus, Covid-19. From Monday, schools will open as emergency childcare provision for key workers and vulnerable pupils. |
Friday 20th March 2020 |
Last day of opening. Approximately 60 children have already stopped attending. Pupils took home pencil cases and several reading books each, and a small pack of learning activities to complete at home. [At this stage, we still believed we would re-open after Easter] Senior leaders collated lists of pupils eligible for key worker childcare based on parent requests. Up to 68 children may still attend school each day. Once this becomes confirmed, staff will be placed on a rota to attend. The government have asked schools to continue to operate through the Easter holidays. All staff have agreed to this in principle. |
Monday 23rd |
Thirty-nine pupils had been expected today. In the end, only 22 arrived following more serious government announcements and guidance over the weekend. Teaching staff attended in the afternoon, but will now only return to school for their rota’d slots on a 3-week rota. |
Tuesday 24th March 2020 |
Numbers fell again today to 15 after the Prime Minster’s briefing last night. People must now only leave their homes for limited reasons including work and shopping for essentials. Most shops have been closed. Pupils in school are not required to follow a curriculum. Staff are trying to provide productive and enjoyable activities. |
