Year 5/6 Locality Fixtures - 12/12/24

Round 3 of our locality fixtures...

It was just the one fixture on this occasion with scope to catch-up on others - both teams are all up to date!

Both teams faced St. Wilfrid's.

Netball:

Led by Mr Coates, the team quickly picked up where they left last time - playing fast-paced netball and dominating play. This lead to an early lead for EPJS.

As the game went on, St. Wilfrid's grew in confidence and starting coming back into things. EPJS defended resolutely throughout and it looked as though they might hold on to the narrow lead. Before long, the StW pressure paid off as they equalised the score. In the end, honours were shared and both teams were pleased with a hard-fought draw.

Football:

This week's football fixture saw the introduction of a whole new team of Year 5's. It was clear from the start that the team were excited to get their opportunity (in spite of the cold weather).

During team discussions, it was delightful to see some children stepping up to play in unfamiliar positions - including goalkeeper.

As the game got underway, the team did not take long to make their mark as one of the forwards scored a long-range effort, despite falling over moments before. Following this, a second came for the same forward! The lead did not last long as StW hit one back. End of the first-half.

In the second-half, the team changed completely to give minutes to all. Once again, the team started strongly and extended the lead, making it 3-1 after really positive attacking play. Confidence was in abundance. Soon enough, a successful StW attack led to a quick goal; putting pressure on the team and making the score 3-2. In what was turning out to be a thrilling game, EPJS continued to press-on for more - leading to another quick break and composed finish. 4-2. At this point, it was difficult to keep up and it only got harder as StW hit back once more. 4-3. Towards the end, the tensions continued as EPJS continued to attack and saw a lot of the ball. There were questions over whether the pressure would pay off; these questions were soon answered as a fifth was hit! 5-3. It finally looked as though the game had been put to bed... Nope. StW kept pressing late on into the game and scored a 4th after a well-worked move. 5-4.

Could the team hold on?

Nerves were quickly shaken off as the final whistle sounded and EPJS finished as winners in a nail-biting affair.

Signing Off (for Christmas):

That's all fixtures for this year (2024). Looking forward to 2025, there will be plenty more to come.

A big thank you to all the willing parents and guardians that continue to make time for their children to participate.

Merry Christmas one and all!

Mr J Etherington (PE Lead)
