Year 6 Locality Fixtures - 24/10/24
This week we finally began our netball and football locality fixtures. The selected Year 6's were gleaming at the opportunity to represent their school teams for the first time this season.
The football team donned their famous light blue shirts, embroidered with the EPJS logo, while the netball team opted for the preferred mustard-yellow bibs (a very tasteful choice!).
Mr Coates was back at the reins of the new look netball team and I (Mr Etherington) took charge of the footballers - of which there was a wide pool to choose from. Both teams had little experience of playing with each other - aside from breaktime and lunchtime games.
The inexperience did not show as the netball team played very strongly in both of their games. Firstly, they played a competitive match against St Margarets which ended in a 3-1 defeat. A debutante bagged the goal with an unconventional technique! In their second game, the team really hit their stride, dominating possession, making informed tactical decision and playing a good range of passes. Another debutant scored in this game to make it a 1-0 victory against Georgian Gardens.
Our footballers also faced off against St Margarets to start with. From the very start of this game, it was clear that each player understood their role and was willing to work hard to get a result. EPJS went 1-0 up after a great team move before a similar goal for St M. made it 1-1 before half-time. The second half was neck-and-neck until EPJS took the lead through a wonderful half-way half-volley. It looked as though the game would finish 2-1 but St M. were resolute and managed to score a late equaliser, making it 2-2. In the team's second fixture, they were ready to take risks and it was clear that they had taken on given feedback. Each individual pressed the other team well and saw most of the possession as a result. Chances waxed and waned and it looked like it was going to end goalless. That is until a brilliantly worked play took place and was tapped in by one of the boys. Final result: EPJS 1 GG 0.
Moving forward, the teams will more than likely be rotated due to the interest expressed across the year group. However, each and every participant did themselves proud!
Yours in sport,
Mr J Etherington (PE Lead)
